Floyd County Residents,
I am sure you are all aware of the recent crime wave that has hit our area. I have heard reports from every area subdivision in regard to this problem. Cobbler's Crossing recently had individual(s) recording the contents of people's garage. I doubt they were doing a documentary on clutter! Highland Oaks (my neighborhood) has had a rash of car break-ins, along with a house burglary of a home that backs up to our subdivision. I guess the crooks are no longer happy with the contents of the vehicles as they took my neighbors entire car last night.
WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!!!
The Chief of the Floyd County Police (Frank Loop) attended our association meeting last Tuesday. He informed us that the current staffing levels leave us with few options. He, along with the sheriff, has been begging for more officers. As our community has grown, the level of protection has not. National average dictates the Floyd County Sheriff's department have 60 officers. We have 25...this includes the detectives and the corrections officers in the jail. We usually have 2-3 officers covering the entire County on any given shift. The County Council has recently asked how many officers the sheriff department can "let go".
The Council will not give us more protection unless we demand it. The Sheriff's department is currently asking the Council to approve three more officers. We need at least ten more. The Council will not approve the three requested unless we put pressure on them. The next Council meeting is September 12 at the City County Building in downtown New Albany starting at 4:00PM. This meeting is the budget hearing for the departments. Please contact every Council member on the attached list and ask them to approve more officers. Please keep in mind that elections are coming in November!
Thank you,
Robert Headrick
President
